One of the finest right-hand point breaks on the planet, Honolua Bay lines up along the northwest coast of Maui when the North Pacific delivers NNW to NNE swell, ideally 4-12ft, into its perfectly angled bay. Offshore winds run ENE to SE, with E to ESE as straight offshore, and the wave functions across all tides though medium tide is preferred. This is strictly expert-level surf: four distinct sections unravel over a quarter-mile of shallow reef, the crowd is heavy and the local vibe is intimidating, demanding genuine humility and patience from visiting surfers. Bottom: reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: medium, but exceptional when the swell aligns. Come prepared for a long paddle back up the point after every ride, and treat the lineup with respect or expect a cold reception.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Honolua is one of Maui's most competitive lineups and packs out fast when conditions are good, drawing the island's best surfers alongside visiting pros during contest windows. The local vibe is consistently rated intimidating. Sit deep, take the set that comes to you, and do not snake. Dawn patrol reduces the crowd but does not eliminate it. Do not paddle out here on your first trip to Hawaii.

Access & Facilities

Park along the bluff off the highway north of Kapalua and walk the trail down to the water. The descent is steep and can be slippery. There are no facilities at the break. Lock your car and leave nothing visible inside. Urchins lurk on the shallow reef inside the bay, so booties are worth considering on smaller swells. Sharks have been reported in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

When Honolua is too big, too crowded, or closing out, the reefs around Napili Bay to the south can offer more manageable rights on the same swell. Lahaina-side breaks pick up south swells in summer when the north shore goes flat, giving the entire northwest coast a rest.
