A long peeling left breaks off the rocky western shore of this remote bay, about twenty miles east of Ho'okipa on Maui's Road to Hana. The main left faces almost due east, catching NW to ENE swell and producing rides in the 150-300m range at head-high to double overhead. A shorter right on the bay's east side works with E to SE wind and is more protected from the prevailing NE tradewind, though its quality is swell-direction dependent. Calm or light S to SSW wind cleans up both sides, the lefts prefer SW to NW offshores. Best at medium to high tide during winter groundswell, though summer tradeswell can produce rideable surf. Bottom: mostly reef and rock with some sand. Season: winter primary, summer secondary. Consistency: moderate to good in season. Bring a shortboard or fish, respect the locals with genuine humility, and watch the river mouth after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see almost no one in the water. Weekends bring a handful of surfers. Localism is present but manageable. Forecasts rate it doable with humility and respect. Approach the lineup quietly, don't snake sets, and earn your waves. The remoteness keeps kook traffic low, but that doesn't mean locals aren't watching.

Access & Facilities

Park at the lot off the Road to Hana, roughly 20 miles east of Ho'okipa. The access road can deteriorate badly after rain. No permanent facilities on site. Carry water and food. The river mouth in the bay drains into the surf zone during heavy rainfall, affecting water quality temporarily.

Nearby Alternatives

Ho'okipa, twenty miles west, is Maui's benchmark reef break and worth surfing if Honomanu isn't cooperating with swell direction or wind. Twin Falls and other bay setups along the Hana corridor occasionally produce surf when the right swell fills in.
