An 8-mile sweep of raw Hawaiian coastline on Lanai's north shore, Kaiolohia Bay earns its reputation through sheer variety: multiple reef breaks scattered across the Kalohi Channel, all sitting 500-600 yards offshore above shallow reef. NE to ENE swells funnel through the channel year-round, keeping the lineup surprisingly consistent, but onshore trade winds are the default state. The window that matters is a Kona wind event, when southerly winds push offshore during a frontal passage in winter and transform this stretch into something worth the drive. Skill range is wide depending on size and which peak you choose, and the crowd count hovers near zero. Bottom: reef. Season: winter primary, year-round low-season option. Consistency: high swell, but clean conditions are fickle. That 500-600 yard paddle is real, pack water, check conditions before committing, and have a plan if current pushes you down the coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

With 8 miles of coastline and reefs breaking in every direction, sharing the lineup is rarely an issue. Crowd rating is effectively zero on most days. The local vibe is genuinely welcoming. Keep it that way by being respectful, reading the lineup, and not burning anyone on the rare day others are out.

Access & Facilities

Lanai City is roughly 30 minutes by dirt road. A 4x4 is not optional. No facilities, no services, bring everything you need including drinking water. Hazards are serious: shallow reef, sharks, strong current, and the very real possibility of getting lost on unmarked dirt tracks. The paddle out is long, approximately 500-600 yards, factor that into your fitness and timing decisions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kona winds aren't cooperating, the south and west sides of Lanai offer more shelter from the trades. Hulopoe Bay on the south shore is a reliable fallback for smaller, cleaner surf in trade-wind conditions.
