Named after California shaper Dale Velzy, V-Land is a shallow lava-ledge reef break at the northern end of the Sunset Beach bay that punches above its size. Phantom Reef, sitting over half a mile offshore, focuses WNW to NNW swell into the bay and onto V-Land's defined ledge, producing a bowling barrel with rippable sections that functions as a training ground for the North Shore's best groms. Chest-high to three feet overhead is the sweet spot, medium tide keeps the ledge honest. Calm to light E or S winds are ideal. Intermediate to advanced surfers only, skill requirement rising fast with size. Bottom: shallow lava reef. Season: winter (October through March). Consistency: reliable when north swell is running. Lock your car on Kam Highway before walking through the gates and heading north up the beach, and arrive early to sidestep the weekend crowd that consistently stacks the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are heavy, particularly on weekends and whenever a solid swell is running. Localism is real and intimidating: surf within your ability, sit in the appropriate spot in the lineup, and let the better waves go to those who have earned priority. Humility and respect are not optional here. Dawn patrol on a midweek morning is your best window.

Access & Facilities

Park on Kamehameha Highway and walk through the gates, heading north along the beach. Lock your car without exception. The water is clean and clear. No facilities at the break itself, the surrounding Sunset Beach corridor has food and fuel nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

If V-Land is maxed out or the locals have the lineup locked, Backyards just to the south handles similar swell with a slightly more forgiving takeoff. Sunset Beach proper picks up the same WNW to NNW windows and offers more room to spread out, though it demands full big-wave commitment at size.
