A mellow reef break at the southern end of Kalama Park, The Cove is one of Maui's most accessible learning waves, catching S and SW swells that wrap into a sheltered bay on Maui's south shore. It works best waist-high to overhead on S to SW swell with calm to light NE offshore wind at medium tide. Surf schools crowd the lineup most mornings, so expect company whenever conditions are clean. Bottom: Reef. Season: Summer primary, occasional winter WNW. Consistency: Reliable in summer, hit-or-miss off-season. Dawn patrol on a weekday gives you the best chance of a less chaotic session before the schools launch.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup skews welcoming and mellow. Surf schools dominate weekday mornings and weekend sessions when conditions cooperate. Localism is minimal, but crowded beginner lineups carry their own hazards: unpredictable boards and right-of-way issues. Patience and vocal communication go a long way here.

Access & Facilities

Park at either Kalama Beach Park or Cove Beach Park for easy beach access. Both parks have restrooms and parking. Water quality is clean. The main hazard is the reef beneath, which matters most at low tide or when paddling in close. Wear reef booties if your feet are soft.

Nearby Alternatives

If The Cove is blown out or too crowded, nearby Kihei has additional south-facing breaks along the same stretch of coast. On bigger SW swells, more experienced surfers often look north toward Hookipa for entirely different conditions.
