A long, fast point break in remote Baja California Sur, Shipwrecks delivers rides stretching 150 to 300 meters when the summer south swells line up. SW to S swell from 3 to 8ft-plus, light morning offshores, and a low-to-mid tide window combine to produce long walling rights with serious speed and occasional hollow sections. The washboard dirt road approach filters out day-trippers, so the lineup is mostly committed campers, the majority coming from California and Canada. Bottom: point, reef mix. Season: May through September. Consistency: moderate. Pack enough food, water, and spare tires for multi-day self-sufficiency because there are no facilities at the break itself, and the drive alone will test your vehicle. Experienced surfers who can handle fast, punchy walls will get the most out of this place. The crowd is manageable given the remoteness, though vibe in the water varies crew to crew.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowded by Baja remote standards but nothing like a mainland beach. The lineup fills with campers who have made the effort to get out here, mostly Californians and Canadians. Crew energy varies. Showing up with respect, not burning anyone, and keeping camp noise reasonable goes a long way. There is no resident local community with territorial pressure, but traveling crew dynamics can get political.

Access & Facilities

Reach the turn-off near San Jose del Cabo and prepare for roughly 90 minutes on a rough washboard dirt road. A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended. Carry extra water, food, and a spare tire. There are no facilities, no shops, no rentals. Surfers camp at the break for days or weeks at a time. Bring everything you need.

Nearby Alternatives

When Shipwrecks is too big or the swell angle is off, the San Jose del Cabo beach breaks can offer softer, more manageable conditions. Cabo's east cape has a handful of other points worth exploring when you have the vehicle to do so.
