The washboard dirt road approach filters out day-trippers, so the lineup is mostly committed campers, the majority coming from California and Canada. Bottom: point, reef mix. Season: May through September. Consistency: moderate. Pack enough food, water, and spare tires for multi-day self-sufficiency because there are no facilities at the break itself, and the drive alone will test your vehicle. Reach the turn-off near San Jose del Cabo and prepare for roughly 90 minutes on a rough washboard dirt road. A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended. Carry extra water, food, and a spare tire. There are no facilities, no shops, no rentals. Surfers camp at the break for days or weeks at a time. Bring everything you need.
When Shipwrecks is too big or the swell angle is off, the San Jose del Cabo beach breaks can offer softer, more manageable conditions. Cabo's east cape has a handful of other points worth exploring when you have the vehicle to do so.
