A heavy left barrel and a longer right break over very shallow reef on Kauai's south shore, Poipu Outer Reef is an expert-only wave that demands respect. SE to SW swells are the primary driver, with occasional wrapping WNW swells adding size, best wind is calm or offshore from NNW to NE. Ride it at medium to high tide to keep the reef honest. The paddle out from Kiahuna Beach is long and currents can run hard, so this is not a spot to underestimate. Bottom: shallow reef. Season: primarily summer (SE/SW swells), occasional winter WNW events. Consistency: moderate to low, good days are earned. The left in particular is a quick, shallow barrel that punishes mistakes, while the right offers a more forgiving wall for those who still want overhead-plus surf without the full commitment of the main peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup stays relatively uncrowded compared to the beach breaks inside, simply because the wave filters out anyone who isn't ready for it. Humility and respect in the water are expected. Closer-in spots like Lemon Drops and Waiohai draw more traffic, so the outer reef often rewards those willing to make the paddle.

Access & Facilities

Paddle straight out from Kiahuna Beach. There is a parking lot at the beach. The paddle is substantial and currents can be challenging, so know your exit before you go. Water is clean. Shallow reef and occasional sharks are the primary hazards. Bring enough water and sun protection for a long session.

Nearby Alternatives

When the outer reef is too big or too small, Lemon Drops and Waiohai offer more accessible reef waves closer to shore. Heading west along the Poipu coast opens up PKs, Centers, Heroins, and Acid Drop, each with its own mood depending on swell size and direction.
