Reef peaks sitting in the shadow of Honolulu's industrial harbor, Sand Island State Recreation Area punches above its urban surroundings with a mish-mash of rights and lefts that can genuinely fire on a south to SW swell. Optimal conditions call for 3-6ft S to SW swell, a medium tide, and calm or N to ENE offshore wind. Water quality is the honest asterisk here: harbor entrances on both sides degrade conditions after rain, and shark sightings near commercial fishing boats are a real consideration. All ability levels can find a wave, though the peaks suit shortboarders and longboarders alike when shape cooperates. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium, with summer south swells the reliable engine. Arrive early on weekends when a fun swell is running, the lineup fills faster than the spot's off-the-radar reputation suggests.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups here are generally mellow compared to Town's main reefs, but weekend swells attract more bodies. Humility and respect are the entry fee, especially during busy sessions. Dawn patrol pays off. Localism sits at a manageable level but is not absent, so read the room and wait your turn.

Access & Facilities

Sand Island State Recreation Area has a car park, camping, and showers. The island is now connected to Dauphin Island by land, removing the old channel paddle. Water quality can degrade around rain events due to harbor outflow on both sides, so check conditions after heavy rainfall before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sand Island is blown out or the swell direction is wrong, Kewalo Basin catches swell consistently and offers more defined peaks a short drive toward Town. Ewa Beach reefs to the west are worth checking if you want fewer bodies in the water on a clean S swell day.
