A powerful, double-sided reef break sitting between Log Cabins and Off-The-Wall on Oahu's North Shore, Rockpile earns its name from the submerged lava that makes it both compelling and consequential. The primary draw is a meaty left that demands NW to WNW swell angle, a right opens up on more northerly tracks and pulls in more raw size than most surrounding spots. SE to S trade winds hold it clean, medium tide is safest, and it starts showing shape around 6ft but is better at 8-15ft when the reef is properly covered. Experts only, full stop. The submerged lava fingers are genuinely punishing at lower tides and on smaller swells when the reef sits closer to the surface, so mid tide and real size are non-negotiable. Crowds run lighter than Pipe proper, but the consequences of a wipeout here are widely considered heavier. Bottom: reef and rocks. Season: November through February. Consistency: medium.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups run noticeably lighter than Pipe and Off-The-Wall, which makes sense given the wave's consequences. Local vibe is described as doable but humility and respect are non-negotiable. This is not the place to test your ego. Weekends stay relatively manageable, especially when it's big.

Access & Facilities

Park at the carpark beside the lifeguard tower at Rockpile or along Kam Highway where authorized. The spot sits directly in front of the rock pile, easy to identify from shore. Lifeguard presence on the beach. Haleiwa town is the nearest hub for food, supplies, and additional facilities.

Nearby Alternatives

When Rockpile is too big or the swell angle is off, Off-The-Wall offers a shorter, faster right sprint nearby and Log Cabins provides a more unpredictable but sometimes excellent option to the north. Smaller days are better spent at Pupukea or Ehukai beach peaks.
