A split-season reef break on Maui's west shore, Rainbows sits in the shadow of the Kaanapali Beach Club and pulls in both winter N-NE swells and summer S-SW swells, though nearby Moloka'i, Lana'i, and Kaho'olawe create significant shadowing that filters out a lot of raw energy. ENE trades blow offshore here almost year-round, giving clean conditions more often than many Maui spots, but expect a crowd regardless of surf quality. Best size runs waist-high to about double overhead, bigger winter rights can deliver legitimate barrel sections over the reef. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round, best peaks in winter and summer swell events. Consistency: medium, due to island shadowing. On larger winter pulses the right can get hollow and grunty, so less experienced surfers should size it up before paddling out. Ride a versatile board: a fish or funboard handles smaller days, while a shorter performance board suits the punchier winter reef.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is minimal and the vibe is generally mellow, but the lineup draws a consistent crowd given its accessibility and resort proximity. Weekends and any day with clean, organized swell will pack it out. Respect the rotation, don't drop in, and keep it friendly to maintain that welcoming atmosphere.

Access & Facilities

Parking and facilities are limited at Honoapiilani Park. The break is easy to reach on foot once you find access along the Kaanapali resort corridor. No food or rentals on site, so come self-sufficient. Reef hazards are the primary concern, reef shoes and a helmet are worth considering for beginners.

Nearby Alternatives

When Rainbows is too crowded or the swell isn't cooperating, Osterizers sits just to the south as a consistent A-frame option. Further north, the reefs between Honokowai and Kahana offer scattered peaks with a bit more breathing room on busy days.
