A long, curving reef west of Canoes, Populars (Pops) delivers peeling rights with bowly inside sections and shorter mushy lefts across a submerged reef shelf in Waikiki. SE to SW swells are the go, with S to SW most productive. NE winds blow straight offshore. Best from waist-high to well overhead, though it fires hard on a big S swell when the heavies descend and the mellow vibe evaporates. Suits beginners through intermediates in average conditions, but expect a heavy lineup of mixed ability and craft at all times. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium. Bring a longboard or funboard for smaller days, and watch your head in a crowded set wave situation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Populars is consistently one of the most crowded stretches of reef in Hawaii. All skill levels and every type of craft from shortboards to SUPs compete for the same waves. Localism is generally doable but tolerance drops sharply when a solid SSE or S swell rolls in and the performance crowd shows up. Dawn patrol is the best strategy for elbow room.

Access & Facilities

Located in front of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, east of Canoes across a paddle channel. Parking is available nearby. A lifeguard station is on the beach, and the area has a rescue station with AEDs and first aid supplies through the Adopt a Cove program. Water is generally clean but this is a densely populated coastline.

Nearby Alternatives

Canoes and Queens sit just east and offer similarly mellow longboard-friendly reef waves when Pops is maxed out or too crowded. For more performance-oriented surf, Kaisers to the west has a quality right when conditions align, and Kewalo's pulls in swell consistently year-round.
