A raw, reef-studded stretch of north Lanai coast delivers a surprising variety of lefts and rights year-round, accessed only by 4x4 dirt roads that keep the lineup nearly empty. ENE trade swell threads through the gap between Molokai and Maui to reach Pohakuloa with reliable consistency, but it usually drags onshore trade winds with it. The best windows come in winter, when prefrontal south winds clean things up and solid ENE swell is running. Large NW or WNW swells can also wrap energy around the west side of Molokai and fire up the points. Intermediate to advanced surfers will handle the persistent trades and ripping currents, this stretch is not the place for beginners to find their feet. Bottom: Reef. Season: Winter peak, but rideable most of the year. Consistency: High for Hawaii's leeward standards. Budget for a genuine paddle burn: the channel-to-break distance is long, and scoring a good ride means an equally long paddle back.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The 4x4 access road acts as a natural filter. Crowds are minimal to zero across the variety of reef points on this stretch, and the local vibe sits firmly at the welcoming end of the spectrum. Keep it respectful and it stays that way.

Access & Facilities

Dirt roads only. A capable 4x4 is required, not optional. Getting lost is a listed hazard, so a downloaded offline map or local knowledge is worth having before you leave Lanai City. No facilities on-site, carry water and sun protection. Water quality is clean. Primary hazards are shallow reef, sharks, and currents that make the paddle back from the points a serious exercise.

Nearby Alternatives

Lanai's south and southwest shores pick up different swell windows when the north coast is blown out. Shipwreck Beach to the east offers a change of scenery on lighter trade days, though wave quality is generally lower.
