A roadside reef break six miles south of Lahaina, Olowalu delivers a mix of lefts and occasional rights across three separate peaks when SSW-SW swells funnel through the channel between Lana'i and Kaho'olawe. The main left peels off the jetty spit and works best chest-high to double overhead, with low to mid tide keeping the reef honest and the shape clean. NE winds are straight offshore here, and summer is the prime window when south swells light up the lineup consistently. All skill levels can find something on smaller days, but size brings consequence fast over shallow reef, so intermediate and up surfers will get the most out of it. Bottom: reef. Season: summer (May through September). Consistency: moderate, hit or miss depending on swell angle and size. Bring reef booties if your feet aren't hardened, the coral is unforgiving on a wipeout and the current runs hard when swells push through.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay light, which makes it a genuine option for a relaxed session. Weekends flip the script and the roadside access draws a crowd fast. The vibe is generally welcoming and the locals are not territorial, but weekend afternoons can get competitive at the main peak. Dawn patrol midweek is the move.

Access & Facilities

Driving northwest from Maalaea toward Lahaina on the Honoapiilani Highway, the break is roadside on the ocean side just past Olowalu town. Roadside parking is easy but limited. No formal facilities. Water is clean. The reef is the primary hazard, sharp and shallow, especially on lower tides. Watch for current on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

If Olowalu is flat or blown out, the Maalaea Pipeline to the southeast is a fast right-hand option when conditions align. Heading north toward Lahaina, Launiupoko Beach Park has a mellower A-frame reef that handles similar swell windows and suits beginners on smaller days.
