A low-key sandbar break on Vancouver Island's exposed west coast, North Beach sits north of Tofino near the Lynn Road public access off Pacific Rim Highway. It works best on NW to W swell in the 3-8ft range, with offshore winds out of the SE keeping faces clean. Mid-to-low tide produces the best shape on the sandbars, while higher tides tend to shut things down to a close-out shore dump. This is genuinely a winter wave: summer sees little swell and flat, windblown conditions, but October through March can deliver solid NW groundswell with punchy, short-interval beach peaks. The crowd stays light even on weekends, though local respect is non-negotiable here. Bottom: sand. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: moderate in winter, nearly flat in summer. Bring a 5/4 full suit with booties and hood. Pacific water temperatures on this stretch of coast sit around 8-12°C year-round and cold-water exposure is a real consideration.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are nearly empty, weekends see a handful of surfers. Locals here are known to be territorial. Yield on set waves, keep a low profile, and don't paddle straight to the peak without reading the lineup first. This is not the place to act entitled.

Access & Facilities

Access via Pacific Rim Highway out of Tofino. No formal facilities on-site. Tofino town has surf shops, board rentals, and food. Check water quality after heavy rain as runoff affects this stretch of coast.

Nearby Alternatives

South Chesterman's Beach is a separate break with different sandbar orientation and can pick up swell at different angles. Cox Bay handles bigger NW swells better and has a more consistent channel. If North Beach is closing out, both spots are worth checking on the same run.
