A left-hand reef point on the eastern rim of Hulopo'e Bay, Manele Bay on Lanai's south shore is a fickle but genuinely rewarding wave when summer S to SW swell wraps around the point. Optimal conditions arrive with S to SW swell at head-high to double-overhead, mid-tide, and the easterly trades grooming the face clean. It suits good intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle reef and the longer paddle that comes with bigger, longer point break rides. Bottom: reef. Season: summer primary, occasional winter WNW wrap. Consistency: fickle. Bring a step-up if swell is pushing double-overhead, and be ready to earn your rides with extended paddle-backs.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd levels swing with surf quality, ranging from mellow to moderate depending on whether the wave is actually on. Localism is welcoming but humility and respect in the lineup go a long way, as they do anywhere in Hawaii. If it's firing, expect company.

Access & Facilities

Park at Hulopo'e Beach Park, west of the Manele boat harbor on Lanai's south side. The park has facilities and the bay itself is a marine reserve, so be mindful of the reef. Water quality is clean. Reef and current are the primary hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

When Manele isn't working, the shorter peaks just outside the reef edge can offer some fun on the right day. Lanai's limited surf options mean this is often the go-to south swell destination on island, so flexibility on timing helps.
