A raw, east-facing shorebreak and reef setup at the easternmost tip of Oahu, Makapu'u splits into two distinct experiences: the heavy, shallow sand shorebreak in the main bay, which is bodyboard and bodysurf territory, and Suicides, a racey hollow right peeling over shallow rock and reef off the northern point in front of Sea Life Park. Both spots run on year-round NE to E tradeswell, meaning there is almost always something rideable, but persistent onshore tradewinds keep conditions choppy through much of the summer. Winter is the prime window: NNW to NE swells deliver more size and power, and passing fronts occasionally clock the wind offshore from the SW, turning Suicides into a legitimate stand-up wave. Best at medium tide, chest-high to well overhead. Dangerous shorepound, very shallow reef and sand, and strong currents demand respect. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: year-round, best winter. Consistency: high due to tradeswell exposure. Come at dawn during light trade days for the cleanest glass.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay mellow with a small crew. Weekends draw more bodies, and when Suicides is firing with offshore winds, the reef break can get packed. The local vibe is welcoming overall. Lifeguards prohibit stand-up surfing in the bay area when they are on duty, so read the signs and respect the call.

Access & Facilities

Paved road leads directly to Makapu'u Beach Park with ample parking. Easy to find off the Kalanianaole Highway on the southeast corner of Oahu. Restrooms and lifeguards on site. Watch for jellyfish blown in by the trades, and treat the shorepound seriously: it has injured strong swimmers.

Nearby Alternatives

Sandy Beach, just a few minutes south, is a similar heavy shorebreak with a comparable vibe when Makapu'u is too crowded or wind-blown. Further west toward Waimanalo, beach peaks offer a mellower alternative for smaller days.
