Four distinct sections stack along this west-facing reef point on Oahu's Leeward Coast, and when a solid NW winter swell fills the bay, Point, Bowl, Blowhole, and Inside Reef merge into one long righthand ride. NW swell is the primary driver. SSW to SW swells also work. Best tide is medium to high, with NE to ENE as the ideal offshore wind. The wave handles a wide range, from waist-high fun to 4x overhead heavy-water sets that draw experienced chargers from across the island. Makaha is not a beginner spot despite appearing approachable from the beach. Bottom: reef. Season: all year, winter strongest. Consistency: very high. Reach the lineup by paddling the channel, connect from the top of the point and you earn a long ride, but know that getting caught inside on a set is a legitimate hazard, and the reef runs very shallow inside on smaller days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most historically significant lineups in Hawaii and the local culture reflects that weight. Makaha is always crowded, and on weekends it is extremely jammed. Getting dropped in on is normal here, not personal. Read the history of Mākaha before paddling out. Respect the pecking order, take your turn, and keep the vibe low-key. Aggressive entitlement from visiting surfers is not tolerated.

Access & Facilities

Makaha Beach Park sits right off the road on Oahu's west coast with parking directly in front of the break. Access is straightforward. The channel makes paddle-out manageable but shoulder burn is real if you connect from the top of the point repeatedly. Water quality is clean. Bring reef booties as protection against the shallow inside section on smaller days.

Nearby Alternatives

When Makaha closes out on oversized swells, locals move south to Yokohama Bay for bigger, less sectiony waves. Pokai Bay to the south offers a calmer option when west-side conditions are maxing out.
