La'aloa, nicknamed Magic Sands for its sand-disappearing act, is a shoredump beach on the Big Island's Kona coast where W and SW winter swells literally strip the sand offshore overnight, exposing raw reef by morning. The wave is a hucking peak best suited to bodyboarders and bodysurfers, though surfers can work the left as it rolls briefly before detonating over shallow water. The right demands a barrel pullout right at takeoff. Works on anything from S to NW swell, 3-8ft, at all tides, with calm or E-to-NE winds keeping it clean. Dawn patrol is strongly recommended before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in and chops it up. Humility goes a long way in a lineup that's welcoming but can get busy when a clean swell arrives. Bottom: sand and reef. Season: year-round, most consistent in summer S-SW swell windows. Consistency: moderate. Bring a helmet or impact vest on bigger swells since the shorepound has real consequences over shallow reef.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowds when it's working, lighter when it's not. The vibe is welcoming, but this is still a Hawaiian lineup, so humility and respect are non-negotiable. Dawn patrol cuts the crowd significantly and gives you the cleanest wind conditions before the sea breeze fills in by midday.

Access & Facilities

Parking at La'aloa Beach Park or along the side of Ali'i Drive. Short walk to the water, minimal paddle. The park has facilities nearby. Water quality is clean. Main hazard is the reef exposed during larger swells and the shorepound, which can slam hard and has real injury potential.

Nearby Alternatives

Kona has several other reef setups within a short drive along Ali'i Drive. When Magic Sands is maxed out or sandless, look for nearby beach and reef options that handle size better or offer a more forgiving entry.
