Two distinct reefbreaks share the 40-acre Ma'ili Beach Park on Oahu's Leeward Coast, giving surfers options across most conditions and skill levels. Green Lanterns runs off the north end near the jetty at Ma'ili'ili Stream mouth, producing long rights on medium NW swells. Tumbleland sits at the south end of the park, a faster, more technical left-breaking reef that responds to SW and SSW swells and holds noticeably more power than its neighbor. Both spots work best at medium tide with calm or offshore winds from NE to SE, with due E as the ideal offshore direction. The size range runs chest-high to overhead, and the lineup is generally spread out and welcoming, though expect more competition on weekends when the surf turns on. Bottom: reef. Season: all year, with stronger winter swells and mellower summer options. Consistency: moderate to good depending on swell window. Tumbleland's shallower, sharper reef demands respect, and on big winter swells the entire beach can become a churning mess of strong currents.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The crowd is routinely spread across the beach, keeping density low even on active swell. Locals are welcoming provided you surf with awareness and respect the unwritten etiquette at each take-off spot. Weekends draw more people, so a dawn-patrol start on Saturday or Sunday will reward you with a quieter lineup.

Access & Facilities

Ma'ili Beach Park is a public facility with parking, restrooms, and easy beach access directly off Farrington Highway. No long walks or tricky paddle-outs required. Water quality is clean. The main hazards are the reef underfoot, particularly at Tumbleland's shallower section, and strong rips on bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

If Ma'ili is maxed out or going messy, Makaha a few kilometers north handles larger, more organized NW swells and offers a classic point-style right. Tracks, closer to Waianae town, can also provide rideable peaks when the dominant swell is smaller and the wind cooperates.
