Once nicknamed the fastest wave on earth, Ma'alaea is a rifling right-hand reef break on the west side of Maui that only reveals its full potential on rare, precisely aligned swells. It needs a clean S or SW swell, ideally SSE to SW, in the 4-8ft range, with calm to light offshore winds from W through NW. Mid tide is the sweet spot, too much or too little water and the wave loses its machine-like speed. When conditions align, it produces long, hollow right-hand barrels that peel with extraordinary velocity along the reef, drawing experienced surfers from across the island and beyond. Bottom: coral reef. Season: summer (May through September). Consistency: low, fickle, plan a multi-week trip or get lucky. Avoid SSW swells, which are heavily shadowed and rarely produce anything rideable at this break.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is generally welcoming and mellow on smaller days. When Ma'alaea fires, the crowd intensifies fast as word spreads across Maui. This is an expert-only break when it's overhead and hollow. Less experienced surfers should stick to smaller, more forgiving peaks nearby during minor South swells rather than paddling into the main peak.

Access & Facilities

Park at the Maui Ocean Center on the harbor's east side and walk a short distance to the break. The paddle-out can be long depending on where you enter, and the paddle back after each wave is a genuine shoulder-burner. Harbor proximity means water quality can be suspect after rain, check conditions after any significant runoff. Bring water and sun protection, facilities are limited at the break itself.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ma'alaea is too small or the swell angle is wrong, Lahaina on Maui's northwest coast picks up more swell and offers a more consistent option. Elsewhere on the south shore, various beach and reef peaks activate on smaller south swells and suit a wider range of ability levels.
