A fast, powerful reef break on the Kona Coast, Lyman's delivers long right-hand walls up to 300m when conditions align. It needs solid SW to NW groundswell, 3-8ft, with light offshore trades out of the NE to hold the face clean. Mid tide tends to be the sweet spot before the reef gets too shallow on the drop. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it rewarding on a good day, but the exposed reef and a notorious submerged rock in the takeoff zone make this no place to learn. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round, best Oct-Mar. Consistency: moderate. Watch that rock carefully before paddling out, locals sit tight on its inside shoulder to score the barrel, and visitors who rush the lineup without reading the situation will not get a warm welcome.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a mellow crew, but weekends draw a crowd and the locals are protective of their reef. Show genuine respect in the lineup, wait your turn, and do not snake sets. Visitors who take the time to observe first and paddle out with patience typically get waves. Attitudes here are earned, not given.

Access & Facilities

Drive south from Kona on Ali'i Drive past Banyan's, heading toward Kahaluu Beach Park. Park roadside near the benches. A public shower is set into a garden wall across the road from the spot. No formal facilities at the break itself. The reef is sharp, so reef boots are worth considering, and watch water entry carefully on lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

Banyan's, just up the road toward Kona, offers a longer, more forgiving right-hand reef that handles a wider range of conditions and tends to be more accessible for mid-level surfers. Kahaluu Beach Park to the south has a protected inside section that works for beginners and smaller days.
