A clothing-optional beach break on Maui's southern coast, Little Beach (Pu'u Ola'i) delivers punchy shorepound barrels for bodysurfers and skimboarders, with occasional surfboard-rideable peaks off the rock flanks when longer-period swells roll in. S to SSW swells are the most reliable window, working best waist-high to overhead at medium to high tide with calm or NNE to ESE winds keeping faces clean. Direct S swell hits the specific reef boil hard, but the peak breaks over very shallow reef in roughly two feet of water, making board damage a genuine risk and sharp reef a constant hazard. Primarily suited to confident bodysurfers, skimboarders, and experienced surfers who read lineups carefully. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: consistent summer S/SW swell, rare WNW winter swell possible. Consistency: moderate. Bring a beater board if you must surf it, and respect the small, tight peak that realistically holds five surfers comfortably.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday crowds are manageable and the vibe is genuinely welcoming. Weekends and solid swells draw more bodies to an already small peak. The lineup effectively self-limits due to shallow reef and board-breaking conditions, but tourists regularly paddle out without understanding the hazards. Keep it respectful, keep it small-group.

Access & Facilities

Little Beach sits immediately northwest of Big Beach (Makena State Park) and cannot be reached by car. Park at Makena State Park off Makena Road and walk the beach to a lava rock crossing at the northwest end of Big Beach. The path over the outcrop is short but requires scrambling. No facilities on the Little Beach side. Water is clean. Watch the dangerous shorepound on entry and exit.

Nearby Alternatives

Big Beach next door offers similar shorepound energy on a longer stretch of sand. When south swell is too small or too direct, check Hookipa on the north shore for more consistent wind-swell setups, or explore the various reef breaks along Maui's west coast.
