On rare straight N swells, Laniakea stops being a North Shore warm-up act and becomes arguably the finest wave on the entire stretch, located about 2.5 miles north of Haleiwa. The main takeoff sits 400 yards offshore on a broad lava reef, with NW to N swell wrapping down the line in long, fast, bowling sections. Light ENE to S winds clean it up, mid-tide produces the most consistent shape across all sizes. From head-high to double overhead it handles a wide range of ability levels, though big N swells demand sharp judgment and a high tolerance for wide-swinging sets that can flush you back to the start. Bottom: reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: moderate to high in winter. Paddle out via the channel that cuts through the hammerhead reef alongside the point, and watch the shallow inside sections on your way in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup runs moderate to heavy but spreads across multiple peaks, which dilutes the pressure compared to more concentrated North Shore lineups. Locals are broadly welcoming by North Shore standards. Humility and standard respect for the pecking order will get you waves. Dawn patrol on mid-winter weekdays is your best window for space.

Access & Facilities

Park in the dirt lot on the inland side of Kamehameha Highway directly across from the beach. Easy roadside access with no significant walk. Water is generally clean but can see runoff after heavy rain. Laniakea beach itself is also a well-known green sea turtle resting spot, so expect non-surf pedestrian traffic on the sand.

Nearby Alternatives

Jocko's, the left-breaking half of the same lava formation, sits a quarter-mile northeast and is worth checking when Lani's is crowded or the swell angle doesn't suit the right. Haleiwa Town is 2.5 miles south and offers multiple reef and point breaks plus all services.
