A reef break that swings both directions off the Lahaina Harbor breakwater, this wave is one of West Maui's most consistent and accessible setups. Summer S to SW swells fire up the northern end of the breakwall, producing long, grinding lefts that stand up and barrel across shallow reef. Winter brings the occasional WNW to NNE swell threading the channel between Maui and Moloka'i, wrapping into the southern end as a right that mirrors the left almost exactly. Both peaks get crowded fast, especially on small to medium days when the wave suits a wide range of abilities. At chest high to head high, it's manageable for intermediates with some reef experience. Push it to 1.5x to 2x overhead and both lefts and rights turn fast and unforgiving over shallow sections. Bottom: reef. Season: all year, best summer for lefts, rare winter swells for rights. Consistency: moderate to high. Respect the lineup, the harbor water can run suspect after rain, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Heavy crowds are the norm, particularly on small to medium days when the break suits everyone from longboarders to shortboarders. The local vibe is manageable but real. Humility and patience go a long way here. Talented surfers are a regular part of the lineup, and priority is taken seriously. Dawn patrol is your best window for a less competitive session.

Access & Facilities

Paddling out directly off the breakwall keeps access straightforward. Lahaina town is steps away for food, water, and gear. Harbor water quality is generally OK but can turn suspect after heavy rain or during periods of high boat traffic. Reef hazards are real at lower tides and bigger swells, so booties are worth considering.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lahaina Harbor is maxed out or too crowded, check breaks further along the West Maui coastline for similar swell windows with less competition. On days when the south swell is too small for the breakwall to light up, spots exposed to more open ocean fetch will offer more consistent energy.
