A powerful, uncrowded left-hand point-reef on Maui's remote southern tip, La Perouse Bay rewards the drive with clean carving walls on any decent south swell. It fires best on SSE to SW swell from head-high up to triple-overhead and beyond, with calm or light offshore NNE-NE trade winds that typically hold only through the early morning before onshore flow kills it by 9 or 10am. Experienced surfers will find a fast, rippable wave that lets you work bottom-to-top smacks down the line, with shoulder sections offering cutback opportunities near shore. At size it can bowl up heavy off the shallow reef, but it can also go shouldery and slopey in average conditions. Bottom: rock and reef. Season: summer south swells. Consistency: moderate, fickle outside peak season. The walk in and the rocky entry filter the crowd significantly, so arriving at first light gives you the best conditions and the fewest bodies in the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays you can find yourself nearly alone. Weekends draw a handful more surfers, rarely crowded. The local vibe is welcoming, but basic respect and humility go a long way. The remote location and 15-minute walk from the parking area keep casual drop-ins away.

Access & Facilities

Follow Makena Alanui Road south past Ahihi Bay until the pavement ends. A 4WD may be needed depending on current road conditions. Park near the La Perouse historical marker or by the shore. Walk roughly 15 minutes south along the lava coastline. Rocky beach entry and exit is genuinely tricky, especially during solid swell. No facilities on site. Bring water, reef booties are strongly recommended, and watch currents carefully.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Perouse is too big or onshore, Ahihi Bay a few miles north offers calmer conditions and reef breaks that pick up less swell. Makena (Big Beach) further north has beach break peaks that can handle smaller south swells when La Perouse is either flat or out of control.
