A rivermouth peak fed by Kolekole Stream draining Akaka Falls, this boulder-strewn break on the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo punches above its size when north-to-southeast swells arrive. Works best head-high to double overhead on medium tide with calm or westerly winds, though south winds are usable as side-offshore. The right and left both dump hard over a rocky, boulder-scattered bottom, making this primarily a bodyboard and bodysurfer wave, though dedicated shortboarders will find moments worth paddling out for. Crowds are moderate and the local vibe welcoming, but respect in the lineup goes a long way. Bottom: rock and reef. Season: winter peak, but breaks year-round including hurricane swell windows. Consistency: moderate. Steer clear of the inside section as it gets dangerously shallow fast, and be aware of submerged construction cables left near the river mouth that can snag fins or feet.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet. Weekends attract a moderate crowd, mostly local bodyboarders and bodysurfers who know the bottom well. The vibe is welcoming but drop-in behavior won't fly. Humility and respect are the standard here, not the exception.

Access & Facilities

Drive north from Hilo past Honomu, look for Kolekole Beach Park signage around the 14-mile marker area. The road to the park is steep. Park at the pavilions, the break is at the river mouth. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain due to the stream runoff. Watch for submerged steel cables near the mouth. Shark presence is real on the Hilo side.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kolekole is too small or blown out, the broader Hamakua Coast has scattered reef and rivermouth setups that wake up in similar swell windows. Hilo Bay's exposed reefs offer different angles on northeast swells, and the Puna Coast south of Hilo has reef breaks worth exploring if north swells are underperforming.
