Kealia is a reliable north-facing point and beach break on Kauai's east coast, picking up ESE swell that most other spots on the island miss entirely. It works on virtually any swell from below 1ft up to a solid 6ft-plus, and on those rare mornings when the tradewinds back off you get glassy, hollow peaks that reward experienced surfers. Best conditions arrive after a sustained ESE swell window settles and the wind drops, usually early morning before the trades kick back in. The lineup stretches across a bay with the better, longer rides breaking to the far left where locals hold court. Bottom: sand with occasional rock. Season: year-round consistency, best ESE windows October through April. Consistency: one of the most reliable spots on Kauai's east side. Tourists have drowned here when it gets overhead, so treat the hold-down sets with serious respect.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are mellow with just a handful of surfers. Weekends draw crowds. Locals dominate the far-left section and they are immediately identifiable. Show aloha, take the middle peaks, and you will be fine. Do not paddle into the local takeoff zone.

Access & Facilities

Kealia Beach sits right off the highway just north of Kapaa on Kauai's east coast. Pull over at the beach park, visible from the road. There is parking, a small park area, and easy sand entry. No major channel to use when it's big, so a wipeout can mean a long, exhausting swim through the whitewash.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kealia is too big or too crowded, the Kapaa area has smaller beach breaks that handle north or NE swell more gently. Further north, spots along the Coconut Coast pick up similar ESE swell exposure if you are willing to explore.
