A fun reef break tucked under the northwest corner of Hawaii's Big Island, Kawaihae Harbor produces both rights and lefts off the breakwater, with the right-hander being the standout. WNW to N swells track down the northwest coast and wrap into the harbor wall, generating running right-handers, the left drains into the boat channel and plays second fiddle. SW to SSW summer swells fill in from the South Pacific, keeping the spot honest year-round. Best at mid tide with light easterly or NE winds, morning sessions are your best bet before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in and chops things up. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round. Consistency: moderate, hit or miss depending on swell quality. The right is the wave to chase here: be selective at mid tide, stay off the channel edge on the left, and mind the reef and harbor water closer to the entrance.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd levels vary with conditions. When it's good, expect a moderate lineup. The local vibe is welcoming and friendly, so reciprocate that energy. Midweek mornings tend to be quieter, and the crowd thins out fast when the sea breeze arrives in the afternoon.

Access & Facilities

Parking is straightforward at the Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park directly in front of the breakwater. The paddle out is manageable on smaller days and becomes more demanding as size increases. Reef underfoot is the main hazard, and water quality is generally clean but more suspect near the harbor entrance. Booties worth considering if you're not used to sharp reef.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kawaihae isn't firing, the northwest Big Island coast has other reef options that respond to similar WNW-N swell windows. Shifting south opens up spots that pick up South Pacific swells during the summer months when the north shore quiets down.
