A sheltered breakwater wave on Molokai's south shore, Kaunakakai Wharf produces surprisingly hollow, fast rides when the right south swell wraps into the harbor structure. It needs solid S to SW groundswell, 3-5ft to get going, and can hold well overhead on bigger pulses. Mid to high tide keeps the sections linking, low tide tends to shut it down. Works best with light NE trades keeping it clean. Surfers of all levels show up here, but the wave rewards those who work the wall and understand where to position. Bottom: reef and structure mix. Season: summer south swells, May through September. Consistency: moderate, highly swell-dependent. Get as tight to the wall as possible for the best section and arrive early on weekends because this is Molokai's most accessible break and the parking fills fast when it is on.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Both weekdays and weekends draw crowds when the swell is up. This is the most accessible surf on Molokai and locals know it well. Do not be aggressive in the lineup. Sit wide, wait your turn, and respect priority. Positioning close to the wall is the reward for patience, not aggression.

Access & Facilities

Follow signs to the Wharf from central Kaunakakai town. Parking is straightforward but fills when the surf is on. Basic amenities are available in town a short drive away. The harbor environment means watch for boat traffic, submerged structure, and current near the wall.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kaunakakai is too small or too packed, Molokai's more exposed spots further along the coast can offer more energy on the same swell. The island's limited surf infrastructure means checking forecasts before committing to a session here.
