A near-half-mile paddle from Kanaha Beach Park delivers you to a reef break that punches well above its proximity to Kahului Airport, offering consistent NW-to-NE swell on Maui's north shore. Works best at 3-8ft on NW through NE swell with calm or light southerly to ESE wind holding it clean, medium-to-high tide fills in the shallower sections. Dawn patrol is not optional here: trade winds shred the lineup by mid-morning, handing the ocean over to kiters and windsurfers by noon. The wave suits beginners to intermediates at moderate size, with a genuinely welcoming vibe, though longboards and SUPs own the peak. Bottom: reef. Season: winter primary, summer trade swells secondary. Consistency: high. Bring a high-volume board to survive the paddle with legs to spare for surfing, and get in the water before 8am or go home.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The long paddle thins the lineup naturally. Longboarders and SUPs dominate the peak. Localism is minimal and the vibe is welcoming, but respect goes a long way with the regulars who make that commute every morning. Weekends push crowd levels up noticeably.

Access & Facilities

Paddle out from Kanaha Beach Park. Expect 8-10 minutes if you're fit, 15-plus if you're not, and you'll arrive gassed. No dedicated surf facilities on site. The park area has a known homeless encampment nearby: do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle. The reef is the primary hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Kanaha blows out, Ho'okipa to the east picks up the same swell with more punch and a more critical reef. Baldwin Beach offers a gentler mix of peaks for smaller days or less experienced crew. Sprecklesville reefs just up the coast can also light up on kona wind days when the whole corridor cleans up.
