A wedging harbor right on Maui's north-central coast, Kahului Harbor punches well above its size when a solid NNW to NE swell lights it up. Large swells funnel through the harbor entrance, refract out of the deep channel, and collide with energy bouncing off the jetty, stacking into a thick, ledgy wedge over shallow reef and sand. Best at lower tides with calm winds or S to SW flow during passing fronts, the peak works from chest-high to well overhead. This is a bodyboarder's spot and a proving ground for surfers comfortable with abrupt, heavy steps and slab-style barrels. Crowds stay light when conditions are marginal but pack in fast once a clean NNW swell arrives. Bottom: reef and sand. Season: winter (Nov-Feb). Consistency: swell-dependent, works best during Maui's north swell season. Sharks are in the harbor, and water quality is genuinely poor, so think twice before any wipeout.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups stay uncrowded when swell is small or winds are onshore, but a quality northerly swell draws a competitive crowd of bodyboarders and experienced surfers. Bodyboarders dominate the heaviest sections and have priority on the steepest wedge. Humility and respect are expected. Kooks in the peak on a big day is a hazard to themselves and everyone around them.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available at the harbor. Entry is off the rocks directly at the lineup, short paddle out. Currents inside the harbor are shifty and can push you out of position quickly. Water quality is dirty due to harbor pollution. Hazards include shallow reef, sea urchins, rip currents, and sharks. Pack a rash vest or wetsuit top to minimize pollution exposure on wipeouts.

Nearby Alternatives

When the harbor is blown out or too small, Ho'okipa Beach Park just east of Kahului is Maui's most consistent north swell magnet, offering powerful reef peaks across skill levels. Lanes at Ho'okipa provides a longer, more workable right when size backs off.
