Named after North Shore legend Jock Sutherland, Jocko's is a long left reef point on Oahu's North Shore, sitting between Haleiwa and Chun's Reef along Kam Highway. It needs a solid WNW to NW swell to wake up, starting around 6-8ft and holding well past 15ft. Calm to light E-S winds keep faces clean, and medium tide tends to shape the best rides. The takeoff is comparatively approachable for a North Shore reef, but that's relative: when size arrives, Jocko's throws heavy barrels and the current becomes genuinely dangerous. Intermediate surfers can handle it at the lower end of its range, when it's pumping overhead-plus, this is advanced-to-expert territory. Crowds stay moderate because the high-profile spots up the road absorb most of the traffic. Bottom: reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: swell-dependent, fickle below 6ft. Watch several sets before paddling out to locate the channel and takeoff zone, especially on bigger days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is occupied by core North Shore regulars, typically 30-40 year veterans rather than the contest-circuit crowd. Vibe is welcoming relative to nearby breaks, but humility and respect are expected and appreciated. Because Pipeline and Waimea pull the pros, Jocko's sees fewer chargers even when it's going off.

Access & Facilities

Visible from Kam Highway, with roadside parking where authorized. No complex access required. Water quality is generally clean with intermittent run-off during heavy rain. Key hazards: reef, rocks on the inside, strong currents, and cleanup sets that scrub the whole lineup on the biggest swells. Sharks have been reported, surf with awareness.

Nearby Alternatives

Chun's Reef, just up the road, offers a mellower option when Jocko's is maxing out or the current is unmanageable. Haleiwa is a short drive back toward town and handles a wider swell range with better facilities nearby.
