A-frame reef break on Kona's leeshore coast, Honl's delivers punchy, fast barrels a short walk from Ali'i Drive. SW and W groundswells wrap into the bay and hit a shallow coral shelf, producing a right that lines up with the occasional tube section and a left that is noticeably hollower, shorter, and more slab-like at low water. Mid tide is the sweet spot: too low and the left becomes dangerously shallow over exposed reef, too high and both waves lose their punch. Works from waist-high to solid 6ft, though the best sessions come in the 3-5ft range when the peaks are defined and the barrels actually connect. Experienced surfers only. The lineup stays quiet midweek but draws a crowd on weekends, and there is established local hierarchy here. Bottom: coral reef. Season: year-round with peaks in winter and summer swell windows. Consistency: reliable for Kona, given the sheltered aspect. Watch for rebar embedded in the reef near the peak, and do not fall on takeoff or you will meet the bottom fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends pack out. There is a defined local crew that has surfed this break for decades, and the right has historically been ruled by a small group of regulars. Give respect, take your turn, and do not snake sets. Kona localism is real, approach the lineup with humility.

Access & Facilities

Reach the break via Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona. Public beach access is available nearby. No formal surf facilities at the break itself, but Kona town is close for food, water, and gear. The reef is shallow and sharp, so reef booties are worth considering for beginners to the break, and a helmet is not a bad call on bigger days given the rebar hazard near the peak.

Nearby Alternatives

When Honl's is blown out or too small, Lyman's and Banyans a short drive up the coast offer more forgiving reef and point setups that handle different swell and wind conditions. Disappearing Sands nearby is a beach break option for lower tides.
