A sheltered bay on Maui's remote eastern tip, Hana Bay catches the persistent ENE tradeswell that marches straight into the bay nearly every day of the year, producing fun peaks near the center beach in front of the rivermouth. Best size runs chest-high to double overhead, with NE to SE swell the sweet spot. The catch: the same easterly trades that generate the swell usually blow it out onshore, so the best sessions come during winter fronts when Kona winds flip offshore from the SW-W-NW. Mid to high tide keeps the reef manageable. All skill levels can enjoy this wave when it's small, but bigger swells demand awareness of the reef and bay currents that will have you paddling to hold position. Bottom: mixed reef, rock, and sand. Season: year-round, best windows in winter. Consistency: high for small surf, ideal conditions less frequent. The rivermouth on the northern end of the bay runs dirty after heavy rain, so check water quality before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is genuinely mellow with minimal crowds, and locals are welcoming. Hana is a remote, tight-knit community, so bring the right attitude, take turns, and keep the vibe easy. Paddle burns are light, but expect to work against currents to stay in position on bigger days.

Access & Facilities

Hana Beach Park sits at the southern end of the bay with parking and basic facilities. Paddle out from almost anywhere along the shoreline. The road to Hana is scenic but long from central Maui, so plan for a half-day trip minimum. Bring your own food and water.

Nearby Alternatives

When Hana Bay is blown out, the exposed north and south shores of Maui offer more swell-window variety. Hookipa on the north shore picks up consistent trade swell and is worth the drive back if conditions align.
