Remote reef break on Molokai's west side, Halena Beach delivers powerful, uncrowded surf to those willing to earn it via a 7-mile dirt road that demands a 4WD vehicle and a commitment to self-sufficiency. North and northwest swells push the most energy here through winter, producing heavy reef waves that can catch out the underprepared. Summer brings smaller, more manageable surf, but the wave's reef bottom and isolated position mean intermediate surfers should think carefully before making the drive. The lineup is genuinely empty by Hawaiian standards and solo sessions are common, which is either the draw or the warning, depending on your experience level. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round, peaking November through March. Consistency: moderate to good in winter, lighter in summer. Carry extra water, a spare tyre, and a first aid kit before heading out, because help is not close.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Solo sessions are the norm here. The access alone filters the lineup, and on most days you will not share the break with anyone. Treat this as a privilege: keep the area clean, respect any locals who do make the journey, and do not publicise access details further than they already are.

Access & Facilities

The 7-mile dirt road to the break requires a capable 4WD vehicle in good mechanical condition. There are no facilities of any kind: no toilets, no food, no rentals, no phone signal. Pack water, food, a spare tyre, and first aid. A breakdown out here is a serious situation.

Nearby Alternatives

When Halena is too small or the road is impassable after rain, Molokai's south shore can offer gentler reef options in summer trade-swell windows. Maui's west and north-facing breaks are reachable by ferry and provide more consistent access to surf of varying sizes.
