Ha'Ena Bay hosts two distinct reef breaks on opposite ends of the same bay on Kauai's North Shore, giving both regular and goofy footers a winter option. Tunnels, on the eastern side, is a right-hander driven by N to NE swell, named for what happens when it gets hollow over shallow reef. Cannons, to the west, is an equally hollow left that fires on solid N to NW swell. Both peaks work best at medium to high tide and go clean in calm or light south wind. Tunnels can hold faces up to 15-20ft on big sets. This is a wave for confident intermediates at minimum and genuinely advanced surfers when it's pumping. The lineup is competitive, locals run the show, and visiting surfers need to read the hierarchy immediately. Bottom: shallow reef. Season: winter primary, tradesswell rideable in summer. Consistency: reliable in season. Bring a gun for big days and expect a long paddle out to Tunnels.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ha'Ena draws a consistent crowd in winter, though it spreads across the two peaks better than tighter lineups like Hanalei. Locals run this place and the vibe is competitive. Humility and respect are not optional. Visiting surfers who drop in or jockey will find out fast. Watch the local crew, read priority, and earn your waves.

Access & Facilities

Park at Ha'Ena Beach and enter from the sandy beach anywhere in the bay. The paddle out to Tunnels is notably long, plan for it. Cannons is shorter. Hazards include sections of shallow reef, rip currents, and sharks. The rivermouth at the bay's center can degrade water quality after heavy rain. No facilities at the break itself, so come prepared with water and whatever you need for the session.

Nearby Alternatives

If Ha'Ena is maxed out or the crowd is unworkable, Wainiha Bay is a short drive east and can offer calmer options. Hanalei Bay, further east, has several peaks across skill levels and is worth checking on smaller or mixed swells when Ha'Ena is too big or too packed.
