Multiple reef setups off the point at Diamond Head, Oahu, deliver both rights and lefts that cater to a wide range of surfers when sized right. The best breaks, Lighthouse and Cliffs, sit a good distance off the point and pick up SE to SW Southern Hemisphere swell, plus E trade swell. Best wind is calm or offshore from the NW to NE, and the ideal tide runs low to medium. Both spots blow out fast under easterly trades, which hands the lineup over to kite and wind surfers. Cliffs draws the bigger crowd with smooth takeoffs and mellower walls. Lighthouse runs shallower and more high-performance, rewarding surfers who can handle a faster, punchier wave. Work the lineup at small size on any board, but go intermediate to advanced when the sets push chest high and above. Bottom: reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: reliable in summer, fickle outside the window. On larger swells, cross currents run hard at Cliffs, so be aware of your position.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Mostly mellow vibe. Early weekend mornings during a decent swell bring moderate crowds, but the spread between Cliffs and Lighthouse keeps the lineup from stacking up. Weekday midday sessions tend to be quiet. Humility and respect go a long way here. Expect the occasional longboarder to share space at Cliffs.

Access & Facilities

Park off Diamond Head Road. Easy, well-worn trails lead to the beach with channels for a manageable paddle-out. No major hike required. Clean water throughout. Reef and current are the main hazards, and sharks are occasionally reported, standard awareness applies.

Nearby Alternatives

If Diamond Head is blown out by trades, check the more protected spots on the South Shore toward Ala Moana or head west along the coast. When the swell is too small for Lighthouse or Cliffs, smaller reform peaks around the point can still offer something rideable on a longboard or fish.
