A racey, hollow right-hander peeling off a reef outcrop on the south side of Kahana Bay, named for the rock formation on the ridge directly above. NE groundswell is the sweet spot, but anything from N to E can light it up, ideally head-high to triple overhead. Offshore conditions are the catch: persistent easterly tradewinds keep it choppy most of the time, so the best sessions come either at dawn on lighter trade days or when a passing winter front flips the wind SW to SE. Tube-riding skills are essential when it's on at size. A short left breaks on the opposite side of the reef outcrop, though it rarely runs long. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round tradeswell, peak November through February. Consistency: surf most days, quality sessions less frequent. Budget your energy for the long paddle out through the channel and back after each ride.
The long paddle keeps the lineup thin most sessions. When offshore winds align on a weekend, expect a crowd to appear quickly, but the vibe stays welcoming. Respect the effort everyone made to get out there and the lineup will take care of itself.
Park near Kahana Bay Beach Park on the Kamehameha Highway. The paddle out is long but follows a channel that keeps you off the reef. Bring water, urchins and reef patches make entries and exits unforgiving. Sharks and currents are real hazards worth keeping in mind, particularly on the bigger swells that push water along the bay.
When frontal winds make Crouching Lion unrideable, check the more sheltered peaks further along the Windward Coast. Punaluu and Laie offer options that can hold shape in different wind and swell configurations when Kahana Bay is a mess.
