Chun's Reef sits between Jocko's and Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore, offering both a left and a right across a shallow, elbow-shaped reef that delivers long, fun walls in the 2-6ft range. WNW to NNW swell is the move, best in winter from October through February, with calm to moderate E or S winds keeping faces clean. Mid-tide is the sweet spot since all tides technically work, but inside sections get dangerously shallow and the current on the rights turns turbulent on the push. The left spills into a slightly deeper channel and is more forgiving, making it the call for intermediates stepping up from mellow waves. The right is faster and shorter but demands respect. Bottom: reef. Season: Oct-Feb. Consistency: reliable winter performer. Park along Kam Highway in authorized zones only, car break-ins are a known issue here, so leave nothing visible in the vehicle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is regularly busy, especially on weekends in peak winter. Locals rip here and hold their ground. Humility and respect are not optional on the North Shore, and Chun's is no exception. Dawn patrol midweek is the realistic path to uncrowded waves. Aloha exists here, but it has to be earned with patience and correct positioning, not paddled around.

Access & Facilities

Park along Kamehameha Highway in marked authorized zones. Car break-ins are a documented problem at this pullout, leave nothing in your vehicle. No facilities on site. Food and supplies are available in Haleiwa a few minutes south.

Nearby Alternatives

If Chun's is maxed out or packed, Laniakea just down the road catches similar swell and is worth checking. When size drops, the beachbreaks toward Haleiwa offer more forgiving options for a warm-up session.
