A sandbar peak off Brigantine, New Jersey that owes its shape to buried pilings from a long-gone pier, producing a left wall and an inside hollow right section on the right swell. It starts showing life at 3ft and can hold faces up to 8ft-plus on long-period hurricane swells. SW to S swell windows work best, with offshore winds from the NW to W. Mid to high tide keeps it cleaner and longer, low tide can expose the shallow sections over the pilings. The wave suits longboarders and intermediate shortboarders during normal conditions, but experienced surfers will find it rippable on a proper hurricane pulse. Weekdays see a sparse, knowledgeable local crew, weekends draw a bigger crowd when any swell is running. Bottom: sandbar over buried pilings. Season: late summer hurricane season, Aug-Sep. Consistency: low outside hurricane season. Watch the shallow spots over the pilings on lower tides and give respect to the locals who know this bank best.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet with a tight local crew who know exactly when this spot fires. Weekends see numbers climb fast when any swell hits the coast. Locals have earned priority here. Keep it respectful, read the lineup before paddling to the peak, and do not burn anyone on a good set.

Access & Facilities

Drive over the Brigantine bridge and follow the main road approximately 7 miles to the dead end. Street parking along the seawall is free. The beach is open and walkable. Brigantine has limited amenities near the dead end so bring water and wax. No lifeguard presence at this end of the island.

Nearby Alternatives

When Castles is flat or blown out, Atlantic City beaches a few miles south can pick up similar swell with slightly different sand configurations. Ventnor and Margate offer beach break options that respond to the same hurricane pulses if the Brigantine bank is not cooperating.
