One of the most recognizable waves in surfing, Canoes is a submerged reef right off Waikiki Beach that transforms from a wide, forgiving cruiser into a fast, roping tube on solid S to SW swell. SE through SW swell at chest-high to double overhead is the window, with NE winds blowing perfectly offshore. Low to mid tide sharpens the wave up, at high tide it softens into a mellow longboard cruise. The crowd is constant and heavy, every day, year-round. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October for summer S and SW swell. Consistency: high. The real hazard here is not the reef but the outrigger canoes, soft-tops, and beginners tracking unpredictably across the lineup, so keep your head on a swivel and stay mobile in the water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Canoes may be the most crowded lineup on the planet on any given day. Locals are generally mellow and drop-ins are common simply because there are so many bodies. Sharing is the culture here. Dawn patrol marginally reduces the circus but does not eliminate it. Expect beginners, outrigger canoes, SUPs, bodyboarders, and experienced tuberiders all in the same peak.

Access & Facilities

Park at or near Kuhio Beach Park. The paddle-out is straightforward via the channel and the shoulder burn is light once you are out. A lifeguard station is on the beach and the rescue station carries AEDs and emergency supplies through the Adopt a Cove program. Food, rentals, and board hire are abundant along Waikiki.

Nearby Alternatives

When Canoes is a zoo, paddle a little further outside to Queens for more defined walls and a slightly more experienced crowd. Populars, further along the reef, runs slightly less crowded rights with less localism pressure. On bigger days, Kaisers offers a genuinely hollow right for experienced surfers who want to step away from the Waikiki circus entirely.
