A fun, multi-peak reef sitting off Ka'alawai Beach near Honolulu, Black Point delivers lefts, rights, barrels, corners, and open ramps when a decent S swell fills in. Despite the name, it isn't a true point: scattered peaks along the reef each break differently, offering a mix of options from head-high to double-overhead. SE to SW swell is optimal, with E tradewell also getting in well. N to ENE winds are ideal, with true N sitting straight offshore. Medium tide tends to be best. This suits avid to advanced surfers comfortable navigating a reef lineup with occasional heavy sets. Bottom: reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: rarely breaks, roughly five days per year at quality. Paddle out from the beach for an easier entry, though it's a long route to the point, the rock entry cuts time but demands careful timing in any size.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup stays mellow most of the time given the break's rarity and reef entry challenge. A fun-size swell on a weekend with light trades can draw a crowd, but localism is welcoming. Keep it respectful, share the peaks, and the vibe stays easy.

Access & Facilities

Ka'alawai Beach is accessible by car with a short walk to the water. Two entry options: paddle from the beach (easy but long) or time a rock entry closer to the point (faster but dicey in swell). Hazards include exposed reef, rocks, rip currents, and sharks. Water quality is clean. No dedicated surf facilities on site.

Nearby Alternatives

When Black Point is too small or blown out, Kaisers and other south-facing Oahu reefs in the same swell window can offer similar conditions. Diamond Head breaks nearby also pick up S swell and are worth checking on the same run.
