An A-frame reef break off the Kona coast of Hawaii's Big Island, Banyans is the central hub of Kailua-Kona surfing and works year-round on two distinct swell windows. Summer S to SW swells march straight in with minimal obstruction, producing the most consistent conditions. Winter brings WNW swells below 300 degrees that sneak past the island shadow, delivering solid surf while spots like Oahu's North Shore wash out entirely. The right stands up and holds its line with defined turn sections and an occasional barrel emptying into deeper water. The left throws a wide-open barrel on takeoff before ending in a dumping closeout over shallower reef. Both peaks suit intermediates to advanced surfers on a normal day, but size shifts the calculus fast. Bottom: reef. Season: year-round, most consistent summer. Consistency: moderate to high. Dawn patrol is your best call here, before the afternoon seabreeze fills in and the crowd compounds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Banyans is a legitimate local proving ground. When surf hits chest-high or above, the lineup fills fast and the atmosphere turns competitive. Local contests and visiting pros are regulars here. Respect the pecking order, take fewer waves than you think you deserve, and do not expect warm welcomes on busy days. This is not a spot to take a learner.

Access & Facilities

Park along the main road in front of the Kona Bali Kai condos. The banyan tree is your landmark. Paddle-out is straightforward on smaller days but lengthens with size. Reef and urchins are the main physical hazards, so booties are worth considering on lower tides. Water quality is clean. Kailua-Kona town is close for food, water, and any supplies.

Nearby Alternatives

If Banyans is maxed out or the crowd is unmanageable, other Kona coast reefs in the area pick up similar swell and often see fewer bodies in the water. On small summer days when Banyans goes flat, the south-facing bays further down the coast can still be finding waist-high runners.
