Backdoor is the right-hand barrel that peels off the same peak as Pipeline, detonating over a shallow, uneven lava reef roughly 80m off Ehukai Beach on Oahu's North Shore. NW to NNW swells of 5-12ft activate it best, with shorter to mid-period swell combinations breaking up the lines just enough to create a tapering wall that hits the shallowest section of the first reef and throws a deep, intense tube. ENE to S winds keep the face clean. Mid to high tide softens the punishment slightly, but no tide is consequence-free here. Expert surfers only when it's pumping, intermediates can pick around the edges on smaller days, though even then the crowd and consequences demand respect. Bottom: reef. Season: November through February. Consistency: medium, but when it lines up, it is one of the most coveted rights on the planet. Know your exit before you pull in, because closeouts over shallow, exposed reef are not theoretical here, they are routine.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is as heavy as it gets anywhere. A deeply established local hierarchy controls priority, and the rules are enforced without apology. Humility and silence are not suggestions. Do not snake, hesitate in the takeoff zone, or burn anyone for any reason. If you are not already known in this lineup, observe from the shoulder before paddling into the peak. Dawn patrol marginally reduces the pack count but does not reset the hierarchy.

Access & Facilities

Park at Ehukai Beach Park or along Kamehameha Highway where authorized. The beach is easy to find and fully public. Lifeguards are on duty. The shallow reef is exposed at lower tides, and the walk across it in bare feet is a mistake. On large NW swells the current runs hard north toward Gums, use the rip to get out, but know where it is taking you before you commit. No secret paddle channel exists on this side of the peak.

Nearby Alternatives

When Backdoor is maxing out or the crowd is impenetrable, Pipeline itself may offer a more defined takeoff lane, though the left demands its own set of skills. Off-The-Wall, just to the east, provides a faster, high-performance right with slightly less queue pressure on moderate NW days.
