A right-hand point and sandbar combo on Kauai's northeastern shore, Anahola Bay delivers surprisingly long rides when North Pacific swells wrap into the bay and clean up against light SE-to-SW winds. The wave breaks over a mix of shallow reef and sand, starting to show at 5-6ft and holding shape into double overhead. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers when pumping, though the inside stays mellow enough for beginners on small days. Crowds stay light most of the time, with a welcoming local vibe that rewards respectful visitors. Bottom: reef and sand. Season: winter peak, tradesswell summer rideable. Consistency: moderate to good in winter. The paddle to the top of the point is long, so shoulder fitness matters and a longer ride means a longer paddle back.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday lineups are often nearly empty. Weekends see a few more faces but nothing heavy. The local vibe is genuinely welcoming, rated among the mellower in Hawaii. That goodwill is earned through consistent respect from visitors, so keep it that way: wait your turn, don't snake, and tone down the aggro.

Access & Facilities

Enter from anywhere along the wide sandy beach in the bay. The north end is Hawaiian Homes land. A rivermouth at the south end of the bay can affect water quality after heavy rain, so check before paddling out following significant storms. No reef booties required for the sandy entry, but watch for shallow sections as you approach the point.

Nearby Alternatives

When Anahola is flat or blown out, the rest of Kauai's North Shore offers options at Hanalei Bay for more consistent and forgiving conditions, or further east along the coast for other reef and beachbreak peaks that respond to similar N-NE swell windows.
