The go-to cold-front wave on a long stretch of the Gulf Coast, Whitney Beach on Longboat Key is the only reliable north swell option between Bradenton and Venice, a 40-mile gap. NW swell is the move here, best received at low incoming tide when the shifting sandbars have a chance to stand up and give some shape. ENE to E winds clean it up, onshore conditions from other angles can still generate rideable surf, just expect messier faces. Size range is modest, thigh to head-high, and quality shifts constantly with sand movement. Bottom: sand with submerged pilings on the south side. Season: fall through spring, plus hurricane pulses. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. If you're working the Longboat Key stretch and a cold front is tracking down from the north, this is where you check first. Bring a longboard or funboard for smaller days, and keep clear of the south side where those pilings hide at high water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure here is minimal. Crowd rating sits at 2 out of 5 and the local vibe is welcoming. Even on the bigger cold-front days when shoulder burn picks up slightly, this is a relaxed crew. Standard respect goes a long way.

Access & Facilities

The break sits directly across from Whitney Shopping Center on Longboat Key. Parking is genuinely difficult. Leave the car to the south or find a side street rather than circling the main lot. The shopping center nearby covers food and water basics. Stay out of the south section of the break at higher tides where submerged pilings are a real hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Whitney is too small or the sandbars are uncooperative, check other Longboat Key beach peaks for different sandbar configurations. Bradenton Beach to the north and Venice Beach to the south both pick up similar NW swell and offer more parking options depending on the day.
