A crumbly, forgiving beachbreak beside one of East Coast surfing's most storied piers, Cocoa Beach Pier sits in central Brevard County, Florida, sheltered from northerly winds by Cape Canaveral to the north. The pier works best on ENE to ESE groundswell or a stiff NE wind swell, with W winds offshore and workable at all tides, though high tide tends to produce longer rides with inside reforms. All skill levels fit here, though sunny weekends draw heavy crowds spread across the beachbreak peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: medium. The pier structure itself provides the only wind shelter between Sebastian Inlet and Jetty Park, making it a reliable fallback when South Brevard's more critical spots go flat on high tide. Watch for pier pilings on both sides if you drift during a set, and expect murky water from Port Canaveral cruise ship traffic nearby.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is Kelly Slater's home beach and it draws a crowd regardless of wave quality. Weekends and holidays can reach ultra-crowded levels. The vibe is generally welcoming and mellow, no heavy localism, but the lineup is wide and spread out so finding a peak is possible. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the obvious move. Tourists mix with locals in the water, so expect varied abilities across the break.

Access & Facilities

Drive north on A1A from Ron Jon Surf Shop. Parking is a paid lot directly at the pier. Showers and a food shack are on site. Lifeguards are present. Water quality is fair but can turn murky from heavy boat traffic out of Port Canaveral.

Nearby Alternatives

When the pier is blown out or too crowded, check South Brevard's beachbreaks at lower tides for more punch. Sebastian Inlet, roughly 45 minutes south, is the region's most critical break and worth the drive when NE swell has size and the tide is right.
