A mellow sand-bottom beach break beside the Holmes Beach Pier, sitting on the Gulf-facing shore of Anna Maria Island southwest of Bradenton. SW, W, and NW swells are the ticket here, with NE to E winds cleaning things up, low tide tends to produce the best shape. Waist-high to a foot overhead is the practical sweet spot, though it can handle bigger hurricane and groundswell pulses. This is explicitly a beginner and intermediate-friendly spot with a welcoming lineup and light crowds even on weekends. Bottom: Sand. Season: Fall through spring, plus hurricane season. Consistency: Low to moderate on groundswell, picks up reliably on Gulf storm surf. Pilings near the pier are the main hazard, so give the structure a wide berth on any kind of size, and watch for occasional red tide closures that can shut the water down for days at a stretch.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd pressure here is about as low as Gulf Coast surfing gets. Even when nearby Anna Maria Island spots like the Three Piers are tense, this pier break tends to stay mellow. Lifeguards are active and keep an eye on beginners in the water. If you are new to surfing on the Gulf, this is a reasonable place to start without running into attitude.

Access & Facilities

Take SR 64 (Manatee Ave) west out of Bradenton until the road terminates at a large parking lot at the pier. Parking is straightforward. No rental signal in the sources, so bring your own equipment. Water is generally clean outside of red tide events, check local advisories before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When this spot is too small or too slow, the Three Piers area on Anna Maria Island picks up more swell on the same SW to NW window and can offer better shape. Sarasota and Venice beaches to the south extend the same swell exposure and are worth checking if a solid groundswell is running.
