One of West Florida's better pointbreaks, Upham Beach Park sits at the northern end of Tampa Bay's surf options and delivers a slow-peeling right that can stretch to 100 yards on a clean NW swell. Best conditions come on W to NW swells from 2ft up, with NE or E winds keeping the face tidy. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot. The wave suits all ability levels, but expect heavy crowds when it's actually breaking, weekends especially. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: fall through spring, plus hurricane swells. Consistency: moderate to low on the Gulf. Dredging and T-groin installation have degraded the sandbar in recent years, so dial in tide and swell timing carefully before making the drive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup runs welcoming and nostalgic in vibe, but don't let that fool you about volume. When Upham is breaking, it gets crowded fast, and weekends push into ultra-crowded territory. The main hazard flagged by locals alike is getting run over. Give right-of-way appropriately and keep situational awareness high, especially when the crowd stacks up on a bigger swell day.

Access & Facilities

Public beach access with standard park facilities. Upham is the last viable surf option heading north of Tampa Bay, making it a natural gathering point whenever the Gulf produces. Water quality is generally clean outside of occasional red tide events. Check red tide reports before paddling out if you have respiratory sensitivity.

Nearby Alternatives

When Upham is blown out or too crowded, scan other Gulf-facing breaks along Pinellas County for whatever swell is running. Hurricane swells sometimes activate beachbreaks further south along the barrier islands that dodge the crowd.
