A winter-heavy beach break on Florida's Emerald Coast, The Pumphouse fires between Sandpiper Cove and Two by Fours where a harbor outflow pipe pushes clean gulf water offshore. SE, S, and SW swells are the engine here, with NW to NE winds grooming the faces into hollow, punchy walls. Low to incoming tide is the window: the outside take-off section is exposed and powerful, and the inside goes genuinely shallow over hard-packed sand. This is expert-only water, not because the waves are exotic but because the shorebreak is violent, the currents are real, and the paddle-out is exhausting. Bottom: shallow hard-packed sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane pulses. Consistency: moderate. Scope the buoy marking the outflow before paddling, if it's gone, the peak sits roughly 250 yards opposite the block building on the right side of the road.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate, but the local vibe is firm. Locals here have earned their spot through years of heavy conditions. Come respectful, read the lineup before paddling out, and don't expect warm welcomes if you're unfamiliar. Strong local presence is part of the deal at any consistent Florida gulf break with real waves.

Access & Facilities

Park along the road after passing Sandpiper Cove and walk in. The parking area is flagged as dangerous, so do not leave valuables in your car. Look for the low block building to orient yourself. Hazards are serious: powerful shorebreak, strong lateral currents, jetties nearby, and the occasional unpredictable person on the beach. Stay alert from paddle-out to exit.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Pumphouse is too heavy or the swell angle is off, Sandpiper Cove to the west and Two by Fours to the east offer softer options along the same stretch of coast. Both respond to similar swell windows but handle smaller, less powerful days more forgivingly.
